Buyside Liquidity

Definition
Buyside liquidity is the pool of resting buy stop orders that sits above an identifiable old high, equal highs, or swing high. These orders belong to breakout buyers entering long and short sellers covering with protective stops. The algorithm seeks these pools because they represent fuel — the only place where enough willing counterparty exists to fill large institutional orders.
Key characteristics
- Resides **above** old highs, equal highs, session highs, previous day/week/month highs
- Contains stop losses of shorts + buy stops of breakout buyers
- Acts as a magnet when price is in a bullish narrative or at a discount
- Price often runs buyside to establish a high before reversing (stop hunt / judas swing)
- A reason for price to move, not a setup by itself — you need displacement and a [[Fair Value Gap (FVG)]] or [[Order Block]] after the raid
How it forms
Every time the market makes a high, traders place protective stops just above it, and trend traders queue breakout buy orders above that same level. When multiple highs cluster at the same price ([[Equal Highs]]), the resting order volume compounds. The algorithm catalogs these pools as draw-on-liquidity targets in order to efficiently fill institutional sell programs.
How to use
- In a bearish narrative, expect price to raid buyside before reversing lower — short the [[Fair Value Gap (FVG)]] or [[Order Block]] after a [[Market Structure Shift]]
- In a bullish narrative, buyside becomes the target — exit longs into it, don't chase breakouts
- Pair with [[SMT Divergence]] at the raid for confirmation of reversal
Common mistakes
- Buying breakouts above equal highs (you're the liquidity, not using it)
- Treating every high as buyside — only clean, obvious highs matter
- Ignoring HTF bias and shorting every buyside raid regardless of context
